Making your first moves in Word Deduction

Bring your attention to one round of Word Deduction. Guess the five-letter answer in six attempts. Look at what changes after your first action. Make your first input carefully and watch the result. Use the example below to understand a decision.

Guess a five-letter answer from the included collection. Entries must contain five letters; accepted guesses are not checked against a complete dictionary.

One thing to notice as you play

Read one step at a time and try it on the playing area. Match the instruction to the control you use. Refer to the controls when needed.

What counts as success

Guess the five-letter answer in six attempts. Keep that objective in view throughout the round. Try to explain the aim in your own words.

Work through the instructions

  1. Enter five letters.
  2. Green marks the correct position; gold marks an available copy elsewhere.
  3. Grey means no matching unused copy.
  4. Use the feedback to solve.

Input guidance

Type a guess and press Check guess or Enter. Read a button’s label before selecting it. Use the visible help when you are unsure of the next input.

Follow the example

An answer containing one E can award only one positive E mark in a guess containing two. Compare this with the rule that governs the move. Keep the controls nearby.

Keep this in mind

Repeated letters do not imply unlimited copies in the answer. A different version of the game may use a different rule. Locate the buttons and input area before beginning a long round. Use the on-screen labels to avoid an accidental restart.
